Political dynasties, business, and poverty in the Philippines

Despite studies finding a link between political dynasty prevalence and poverty, empirical evidence in the Philippines shows that relationship dynastic concentration underdevelopment is not same across regions. We argue an independent economic elite high levels of activity, typically found Luzon, affect poverty development impact dynasties. Local socioeconomic contexts shape opportunities for predatory behavior among politicians their relationships with elites. Using novel survey data on business-government linkages as well extensive dataset local government leadership spanning 2004 to 2016, we find dynasties exacerbate resource-rich non-Luzon provinces but Luzon where there competitive business environment.
